MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TRANSPORTATION

Q: What is the deadline date for applying for transportation?
A: All applications must be received in the Business Office ON OR BEFORE April 1st for transportation requests for September of the following school year.

Q: If I have transportation this year, do I need to re-apply each year?
A: YES- State law mandates that all parents must apply each year by the April 1st deadline. It is the responsibility of the parent to fill out the application and ensure it is properly filed in a timely manner. The application can be found here.

Q: If I am a new resident, may I apply for transportation?
A: A new resident has 30 days from the date of residence to apply. Proof of date of residence is required. Once approved, arrangements for transportation are provided as quickly as possible.

Q: What are the criteria to apply for transportation?
A: Transportation is provided to elementary grade children (Kindergarten - Grade 8) when the school is located more than 2 miles and less than 15 miles from their home. Transportation is provided for secondary grade children (Grades 9-12) when the school is located more than 3 miles and less than 15 miles from their home. Rye Neck UFSD will provide transportation by public carrier whenever possible (in accordance with Education Law 3635). The district does NOT provide in-district transportation to Rye Neck public school children since all residences are within the legal limits. All applications are road checked for eligibility.

Q: How long will my child be on the bus before/after school?
A: It is the desire of the District that all children transported to or from school or home in the most timely, safe manner. If your child is attending an out of the area school, it might not be unreasonable for that child to be on a bus as much as one hour to hour and a half, due to traffic and unforeseen circumstances.

Q: If I decide to send my child to a private or parochial school after the April 1st deadline, will the request be honored?
A: The Board of Education will deny such request if the form of transportation results in an additional expense to the district.

Q: If my application is approved or denied, when will I be notified?
A: All applications are acknowledged before the end of the current school year (June 30th). Applications are reviewed for eligibility and parents are notified if they are approved or denied.

Q: What do I do if I have applied for transportation and my plans have changed?
A: The Board of Education requests you notify the district as soon as possible if you do NOT plan to use the transportation. The Board of Education, on some routes, pays on a per child basis and if you do not plan to use the offered transportation, the District would appreciate such notification.

Q: If my child stays after school for activities...i.e. football practice, soccer, etc. will the school district provide transportation home?
A: If the child is transported using public carrier, they can access the bus/train between the hours of 5:30 am to 8:30 pm Mondays through Fridays. The card/train pass is not valid on weekends. If a child is transported using private carrier, the Rye Neck Union Free School district is State mandated to provide transportation on school days for regular class instruction. It is the parent's responsibility to pick up their child for after hours.

    Q. If I apply timely and refuse transportation and then plans change, can I be considered at a later date?
    A. Only if there is not an additional cost to the school district. This would be considered a late application.

    Q. How old must my child be to enter Kindergarten and receive transportation?
    A. The Rye Neck Board of Education has adopted a resolution that states children who reach their 5th birthday on or before December 1st of the year of matriculation are entitled to attend school and may be admitted to Kindergarten.

Q: What documentation do I need for my child starting Kindergarten?
A: All students entering Kindergarten applying for transportation for the first time must provide an original Birth Certificate to the Business Office. A copy will be made and kept on file with the application. The office will return the original certificate to you.
