Students in 3rd grade create art inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas.

Students in 3rd grade have spent the start of 2022 learning about legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he made across our country, including the many ways he broke down barriers—and brought a stronger sense of unity and community to our country. And in art class this month, students have studied these same important topics, including an examination of art created by Alma Woodsey Thomas, and learning about her life. Students took what they learned in the classroom about discrimination and segregation and brought that to life in art class. They took inspiration from Alma Woodsey Thomas’ lively and colorful abstract paintings to create their own work with a focus on using different colors, shapes, and patterns.
