Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
What is DEI?
In 2018, the NY State Board of Regents and NY State Education Department began research into what would become their Culturally Responsive- Sustaining Education Framework. In May of 2021, NY State Ed. released a draft policy statement about this framework.
Essentially, the vision is that in New York schools, all students must feel that they are welcome, that they belong, and that they are supported. The premise of the framework is that differences can be assets, whereas too often in the past, they have been obstacles. The policy statement is titled Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
The framework is grounded in four principles:
- Welcoming and Affirming Environment
- High Expectations and Rigorous Instruction
- Inclusive Curriculum and Assessment
- Ongoing Professional Learning
