Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • What is DEI?

In 2018, the NY State Board of Regents and NY State Education Department began research into what would become their Culturally Responsive- Sustaining Education Framework.  In May of 2021, NY State Ed. released a draft policy statement about this framework.
Essentially, the vision is that in New York schools, all students must feel that they are welcome, that they belong, and that they are supported. The premise of the framework is that differences can be assets, whereas too often in the past, they have been obstacles.  The policy statement is titled Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The framework is grounded in four principles:

    • Welcoming and Affirming Environment
    • High Expectations and Rigorous Instruction
    • Inclusive Curriculum and Assessment
    • Ongoing Professional Learning

    DEI Committee

Rye Neck has created a DEI Committee that will look at each of the four principles through the lens of our own district.  The district committee will comprise administrators, teachers and other staff, six students, eight parents, and three board of education representatives.  Additional parent volunteers will be able to participate in subcommittees that will focus on specific aspects of our committee work.
A participation form was shared with Rye Neck families on Monday, October 25th, with a Monday, November 1st deadline.  Additional forms were sent to Rye Neck staff and students in grades 8-12.  The district DEI Committee will meet monthly.
