Rye Neck High School senior Grace West has been named a finalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship program. She is one of 15,000 high school students nationwide who remain in the competition and are honored for their exceptional academic abilities.

West entered the competition along with approximately 1.5 million students from 21,000 high schools nationwide by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors in 2018. She was among an elite group of students to earn some of the highest scores on the qualifying test, which served as an initial screen of entrants.

She advanced to the finals after she submitted a detailed scholarship application, demonstrated an outstanding academic record, wrote an essay and earned scores that confirmed her earlier high performance on the qualifying test.

In addition to her passion and commitment to her studies, West is captain of the varsity volleyball team, co-secretary of the Model United Nations Club, a member of her high school’s Mock Trial team, Peer Leadership, Student Athlete Cabinet and Student Senate.

The National Merit Scholarship program will award approximately 7,500 scholarships worth more than $31 million. Winners will be announced in the spring.
